Godfrey – Last Friday the 24th at 6 p.m., the men’s soccer team from Lewis and Clark Community College faced a high-level opponent in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, an NCAA Division I program. It was an intense and exciting match, ending in an epic fashion that highlighted the team’s strong performance throughout the spring season.

The game could not have started better for LC. From the opening minutes, the team showed attacking intent and confidence, quickly taking the lead. Ratis opened the scoring after a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, finishing calmly to put LC ahead early. Despite the strong start, the match remained balanced, with both teams competing for control.

SIUE responded well, and the game became more even as both sides created chances. With about 10 minutes left before halftime, SIUE equalized from the penalty spot, making it 1-1. However, instead of losing momentum, LC reacted positively.

After conceding, LC began to dominate the game. They created the clearest chances, with several very dangerous opportunities, but were unable to convert. As a result, the score remained tied 1-1 going into halftime despite LC’s superiority.

The second half followed a similar pattern. LC continued to control the game, creating chances but lacking finishing accuracy. Eventually, Craig made the difference with a high-pressure play: he stole the ball from the opposing goalkeeper and scored to make it 2-1, giving LC the lead once again.

From that moment on, the dynamic of the match shifted. SIUE pushed forward aggressively in search of an equalizer, creating several dangerous chances. The ending was nothing short of cinematic. With just 7 seconds remaining, SIUE played a long ball over the defense. Their forward controlled it and took a shot, but goalkeeper Alex Cahil made a crucial touch, slightly deflecting the ball. It struck the post, and immediately after, the final whistle blew.

After the match, LC player Marco López summed up the experience:

“This game shows exactly who we are as a team. We proved we can compete against a Division I opponent, and more importantly, we showed character when it mattered most. After they tied the game, we responded the right way, and that last play says everything about our fight and determination until the very end.”

It was a spectacular and unforgettable ending to the final men’s soccer match of the spring season. With this victory, LC finishes the spring with an impressive record of five wins and just one loss, competing against strong programs. It is a clear reflection of the team’s growth, competitiveness, and resilience.
