Godfrey – The Green Mile, directed by Frank Darabont and based on the novel by Stephen King, is a powerful and emotional film that explores themes such as justice, humanity, compassion, and the supernatural. The story is set during the Great Depression in a prison, specifically on death row, which is nicknamed “The Green Mile” because of the color of the floor. The film is narrated by Paul Edgecomb, a prison guard who reflects on his experiences many years later.
One of the central themes of the movie is the idea of justice and injustice. The character John Coffey is wrongly accused of murdering two young girls. Despite his intimidating physical appearance, he is kind, gentle, and possesses a miraculous healing power. As the guards get to know him, they begin to question whether the justice system has made a terrible mistake. This creates a strong emotional conflict, as they are forced to carry out his execution even though they believe he is innocent.
Another important theme is the contrast between good and evil. The film shows that not all prisoners are evil and not all authority figures are good. While Paul and some of the guards treat the inmates with respect and empathy, Percy Wetmore is cruel and abuses his power. This contrast highlights how morality depends on a person’s actions, not their position or appearance.
