Godfrey – The Lewis & Clark men’s soccer team earned an important 2–0 win on the road against Maryville University in a match defined by intensity, physical play, and smart decision-making in key moments.
The first half was very evenly contested from the start. The home side came out strong, using their physicality to make things difficult for LC in the opening minutes. On top of that, Maryville University had the advantage of the wind at their backs, which made it harder for LC to build out from the back. Despite this, LC held their ground well and continued to compete at a high level.
Just before halftime, one of the most controversial moments of the game occurred. LC found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a very questionable offside call, sending the teams into the break tied 0–0.
In the second half, LC looked more comfortable on the ball, although Maryville University maintained their relentless energy. Their high pressing remained effective, forcing LC to stay sharp and focused throughout.
The game finally broke open with 20 minutes remaining. The referee awarded a free kick right at the edge of the box, and that’s when the cleverness came into play. Javier Lopez quickly took the ball while the opposing players were forming a wall without having asked for the required distance. With the goalkeeper still organizing the defense, he smartly struck the ball into an empty net to give LC a 1–0 lead.
After conceding, Maryville University pushed forward in search of an equalizer, but their urgency led to another costly mistake. They gave away a second dangerous free kick near the box. This time, Craig delivered a perfect ball to the back post, where Piggy finished with an outstanding header to make it 2–0.
After the match, Piggy highlighted the team’s effort and ability to capitalize on key moments:
“We knew it was going to be a very physical game and that we had to take our chances. Craig’s ball was perfect, and I just had to guide the header. This team never stops believing, and we showed that today.”
A hard-fought and intelligent win for LC, who showed resilience under pressure and made the most of their opportunities to secure a valuable result on the road.
