Chris Coles, this year’s student speaker, delivered an inspiring speech centered around the themes of perseverance, purpose, and the power of grace. Reflecting on her unique journey.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life doesn’t always follow a straight line,” Coles said. “My journey—from putting myself through college at 18, to walking back through those doors 25 years later—has been anything but typical. It’s been shaped by moments of struggle, love, heartbreak, and growth. But through it all, I’ve learned how powerful perseverance can be.”

Coles also emphasized the importance of empathy and support in her academic journey, particularly highlighting the impact of her math professor, Stephanie Killion.

“Even though we met through a screen, her kindness, support, and compassion changed my entire trajectory,” Coles said. “She saw me not as just another student—but as a whole person. That kind of empathy made all the difference, and it’s something I carry with me into my own classroom now.”

Graduating student Hannah Herrmann expressed the significance of being recognized for her efforts.

“When you’re balancing several things and struggling with different responsibilities, it means so much to be honored and recognized for your dedication,” Herrmann said. “To just have someone tell you you’re doing well, and your efforts are appreciated, can give you the encouragement and affirmation you need to keep going.”

Laura Inlow, Manager of Marketing & Public Relations, highlighted the importance of recognizing students who go above and beyond in their commitments.

“Each year, Honors Awards celebrates those students who have given just that little bit extra to stand out from their class,” Inlow said. “Many of our students are working and going to school at the same time. Many have families and other responsibilities on top of that.”

“Good grades and diplomas are wonderful, but for me, a good work ethic makes all the difference when it comes to a student’s future success. These students, in that respect, are definitely the best of the best,” Inlow said.

The Honors Awards Ceremony is a highlight of the academic year at Lewis and Clark Community College, highlighting the institution’s role in fostering an environment where students can thrive and excel. These awards recognize academic success and the students’ perseverance and resilience.

Congratulations to all those who were nominated and received awards this year.
