Book Review: The Giver by Lois Lowry

Isabella Sanchez Gonzalez Avatar

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a dystopian story about a boy named Jonas who lives in a
community that seems perfect. There is no war, no hunger, and no pain. Everyone follows
rules, and the leaders make all the important choices. People do not see color, and they do not
feel strong emotions.

When Jonas turns twelve, he is chosen to be the Receiver of Memory. An old man called the
Giver gives him memories from the past. Jonas learns about love, family, snow, music, and
happiness. But he also learns about pain, fear, and sadness. As he receives these memories,
Jonas starts to see that his community is not as perfect as it seems.

The main theme of the book is freedom and choice. The story shows that when people do not
have choices, they also lose feelings and part of what makes them human. I liked this book
because it makes you think about your own world. It is simple to read but has a deep
message. I would recommend it to students who enjoy thoughtful and emotional stories.
