October Student Activities to Scare You Virtually to Death

Can I let you all in on a little secret? The last couple of years I have had an inside scoop at what was going on behind the scenes for Lewis and Clark Community College’s Student Activities scheduled events, sometimes before they were even scheduled!

That is one of the best things about being Student Activities President, the ability to come up with new, and hopefully fun and diverse, events so students can enjoy a break and get a full college experience, and maybe even get some free stuff too.

Having been President the past two years in a row has been an honor, and I can tell you without a doubt, the Fall semester is my favorite to plan and execute activities and events for. Obviously, this Fall has some obstacles that have been thrown our way, and I believe that L&C has taken the dumpster-fire that has been the year 2020, and done the absolute best to ensure that our students are safe while trying to still have some fun virtually.

So without further ado, I will begin discussing some of the fabulous virtual events on the calendar already for the month of October. Remember, anything could be changed or added, updated information is always available on the Student Activities Facebook page.

For the first time, yoga will be offered for FREE and taught by Louise M. Hamlin-Laird, a certified and experienced, registered yoga teacher and Yoga Alliance Continuing Education provider. This course is open for students, staff and faculty. We will be starting it on a trial basis on Wednesdays with an alternating time range, to see what time fits better for people. The first class will be on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020 at 6 p.m on Zoom.

The class will be called a Flow & Restore Class and will incorporate slower energetic movements, breath work and restorative poses with modifications to allow the class to be suitable for all levels of experience. There is a hope that this will be a great benefit to not only students, but staff and faculty as well, as stress and tension levels are high right now.

Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020 is a busy day— there will be an Illinois Community College Student Activities Association (ICCSAA) collaborated event called VCR Party that will start at 7 pm on Zoom. VCR Party is a comedic show that is like watching all the best YouTube videos with your friends. Join Nick and Joe on their guided tour through their collection of VHS tapes. One of the only shows where you can see 80s exercise videos, magical rainbow sponges and cats riding motorcycles. This show has been featured on Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Tosh.0, America’s Got Talent, NPR and many others.

The Netflix Party Movie Nite will continue on Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, at 7 pm. The movie has not been decided at this time but recommendations are always welcome on the Student Activities Facebook page. This is a function for those who already have a Netflix account, the only other necessities are a computer, laptop or tablet. There are detailed instructions on how to download the extensions for this feature available.

Student Activities will be hosting a Pop-Culture Trivia Event via Zoom on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2020 at 6 p.m. Student Government Association Secretary Milli Carter said, “I am so excited for this. I am the one setting this up and it’s going to be pop-culture like music and movies, maybe some Disney, maybe some Halloween. We’ll have to see…”. Students need not be on a team but can be single players and will be placed on teams on game night if needed. Prizes for winning teams include a choice of a gift card OR a L&C face mask.

The second night of FREE yoga will be Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020 at 3 p.m. on Zoom. Again, this class is open to students, staff and faculty, but there is no specific rule that says my sister cannot do it with me!

Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020 is the START date for an online, Facebook Pumpkin Contest! Basically, you can decorate, carve, paint, bedazzle, or do whatever to a real pumpkin; but you can also draw, paint, photograph, bake, do whatever else, just make it pumpkin! It does have to be school appropriate. Please no filters. It will be judged in four themed categories— L&C, Halloween, 2020 Election and Thanksgiving. The contest ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020, and whatever you create has to be photographed and posted on the official post (it will be marked as such) on Student Activities Facebook’s page by the deadline. Prizes include choice of a gift card OR a L&C face mask.

One event that I do not have all the details about yet, is ironically called “Factuality” and is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020 at 3 p.m. on Zoom. When I researched what Factuality is online it says that it is a crash course, interactive experience that stimulates what a real life encounter in America may feel like. It is meant to evoke empathy, enhance self-awareness and increase cultural competency.

Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020 at 6 p.m. on Zoom, is another night of FREE yoga with Ms. Hamlin-Laird. By this time, we are hopefully getting an idea what time range is working best for students, staff and faculty.

Starting Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, another set of online Facebook Contests will be starting: Best Halloween Costume, Best Special Effects Makeup, Best Cosplay and Voter’s Choice! Costumes must be school appropriate, no filters on photos please. Post your photos in our official post (again, it will be marked that it is the post that photos should be posted on) and then for the Voters Choice Award, the photo with the most Likes will win. The contest will run until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2020. Prizes include choice of a gift card OR a L&C face mask.

Join us for a spooky night of ghost stories on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020 at 10 p.m. on Zoom. We tried this last semester for the first time, and we had a pretty good turn out and it was a lot of fun. I had found a great microwave recipe for s’mores and I had a great time. Students, staff and faculty are all welcome to read a story or just listen in. If you are interested in reading a story, please contact Jared Hennings at jhenning@lc.edu or 618-468-6400.

Student Activities will be hosting another night of Jeopardy on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom. Students can go head-to-head to see who knows the most, who is willing to wager the most, and who is the all out Jeopardy champion for the month of October at L&C! Prizes will be the choice of a gift card OR a L&C face mask.

The last Wednesday of the month, Oct. 28, 2020, at 3 p.m., Student Activities will be once again offering FREE yoga with Ms. Hamlin-Laird on Zoom. This is for students, staff and faculty and definitely something I will be trying out with my camera off with my daughter!

The last event that is being planned for sure for the month, but has not been confirmed for what day yet, is a Virtual Escape Room with ICCSAA. It is being planned for either Wednesday, Oct. 28, or Friday, Oct. 30, 2020. When this information is confirmed we will get it released as soon as we can.

If you have any questions about any upcoming events or ideas about activities we could plan please contact Jenna Shelton at jshelton@lc.edu.
