Jacoby Arts Center is proud to display the “Awards of Excellence 2012” exhibition. JAC Executive Director Melissa Mustain explains that the Awards of Excellence winners were chosen in a juried showing the prior year. This year’s juror, Norah Kirby, invited a small number of immensely talented artists back to present their work at the 2012 exhibition. Those local artists included Jason Bly, Dennis DeToye, Toni Mack, Andrew Van Der Tuin, and Jeff Vaughn to present this January.

This year, JAC has brought together a unique group of artists. And what do you know? L&C is proudly represented by Jeff Vaughn as one of the chosen artists. Jeff Vaughn is one of L&C’s adjunct teachers teaching photography in the art department. His work presented in the exhibition is extraordinary. He paints to perfection lavish landscapes and sceneries that take one’s breath away. In one particular piece, Woods Ravine in Fog, 2012, Jeff Vaughn explains his inspiration and how he went about the piece of work.

“I thought of various photographs of mine that had images of fog or mist that might accentuate the slivery reflective aluminum. We chose the photograph of a foggy ravine on the bluffs near Levis Lane as the subject. It was a spring dawn and includes a flowering dogwood. The trees and dogwood seem to recede or appear in the fog depending on the gallery lighting and one’s vantage point.”

Simply describing it cannot explain the beauty of his work. It is a high recommendation that one take the time to view this exhibition before it closes.

“Awards of Excellence 2012” exhibition is showing now through February 28 at JAC, located at 627 East Broadway in Alton. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m., and is closed on Mondays.

“Jacoby Arts Center is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster the artistic development and economic success of artists, and to expand accessibility to the arts through programs that promote education, participation, and exploration.”
