Student Development and Counseling Services will again offer an Eating Disorders Screening for students on Wednesday, Feb. 18 and Thursday, Feb. 19.

The screening times will be from 8 am – 1 pm and from 5 pm – 7 pm. on Friday, and 8 am – 1 pm on Thursday. The location will be in “Schriefer Commons,” Caldwell Hall, Room 2301.

The screening is designed to provide education that can help prevent eating disorders in healthy, non-eating disordered persons and to provide early detection and prompt treatment for those who have a disorder to increase the possibility a complete recovery.

The event provides eating disorders education through varied literature, displays, and an informative video. Each participant will receive a questionnaire regarding one’s eating behaviors and attitudes toward food, after which he or she can speak privately with a counselor.

Campus and community counselors can provide information, make recommendations, and provide referrals, as needed.

L&C counselors Renée Bauer and Kayla Hansen credit the smooth running of the screening to the assistance of L&C’s second semester nursing students. They direct participants through every phase of the screening under the direction of their instructor, Associate Professor Rodney White.

Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating can lead to potential medical problems, including significant weight loss, loss of menstruation, and serious skin, dental, throat, and intestinal problems. If untreated, this illness can also lead to death.

Information about eating disorders or other mental health issues will be provided at the screening.
Students may also seek information in the Student Development and Counseling office by visiting CW 2320 or calling (618) 468-4121.
