Graphic Design student Jeannette Carrington’s design “Becoming” is the winner of the 2024 Lewis & Clark Community College (LC) Interactive Mural Contest.
The Interactive Mural Contest is an annual contest that LC holds to give the student body a chance to show their artistic prowess, represent the spirit of LC, and leave their mark on campus for years to come in the form of an interactive mural. This specific type of mural is one that lets the viewer participate in the art piece (e.g., posing) and bring it to life.
This year’s theme was “Dreams.” Horticulture Manager Ethan Braasch and Garden Designer Katie Piper were the judges for the finalists after the community votes were submitted. They wanted it to fit the theme of the 2024 Garden Show; the theme was “Cultivate Your Dreams at LC.” Laura Inlow, the Marketing & PR manager, said, “Jeannette’s design had the most mass appeal, and she did a wonderful job bringing it to life. It’s inspirational and colorful, so it makes for great selfies, too.”
“Becoming” was revealed in a ceremony that took place outside the Commons on Tuesday, May 14. It is located on the eastern exterior wall of the entrance to the McPike Math and Science Complex. The mural contains two black silhouettes—one boy, one girl—at the front with six silhouettes leading to a portal behind them, which is in front of a blue, purple, and black galaxy. The catchphrase “Follow Your Dreams” with three stars below it is emblazoned proudly in the top left corner, leading to the other part of it, “Wherever they take you!” in the bottom right corner.
Carrington’s determination to follow her dreams made the mural win the hearts of the community and judges. “I thought that LC is a great place to follow your dreams and start your journey,” she commented. “I didn’t want to limit a person’s dreams to only LC, so I decided on the space theme which was inspired by a Fantastic Four comic book. The viewer can insert themselves into the mural to represent themselves following their dreams.”
Are you interested in submitting a design for next year’s mural? Submissions are due Mar. 14, 2025. If you win, it will be on display for one year. If you have any questions, contact Laura Inlow at linlow@lc.edu.
